Everything old is new again

Yes, I know the 32nd Occasional Doo Dah Parade happened in January, but I'm still receiving what I like to affectionately call fan mail. Whether it's in an envelope or via e-mail, I still love hearing from all the people who shared my day, as well as those who follow my life through my stories in the newspapers and on my blogs.

Most recently, I received an e-mail from Stephen Berkman, a local photographer/artist who z32doo1.JPGcaught me having fun on the big day. These photos are very different from his usual mileau, as Berkman normally works in sepia, using vintage cameras to create his photographs that are little snippets of days gone by with a twist that makes you think. His work has been shown in galleries all over and has even graced album covers for artists such as The Racounteers. (Learn more about Berkman at www.stephenberkman.com. ).

My moments, however, were captured digitally in color... oh my! But they're still really great, so I had to share.

Enjoy!

Charles Phoenix's "Southern Californialand!"

A Comedy about Mid-Century Americana

One performance - March 19, 2009

Pop culture humorist and author Charles Phoenix brings his live comedy slide show performance to Neighborhood Church, 2 Westmoreland Place, Pasadena, for one night only, March 19 at 7:30 pm.  A reception will follow at The Gamble House, 4 Westmoreland Place.

This laugh-out-loud funny celebration of parties, car culture, Space age suburbia, Pasadena, Downtown LA, Hollywood, Marineland, Knott's Berry Farm, Disneyland and more is presented by Friends of The Gamble House (FOGH), as the next event in the Sidney D. Gamble Lecture Series 2009.

Charles Phoenix super-charges the classic living room slide show by reinventing it into a hip and high octane celebration of classic and kitschy mid-century American life and style. His informed narration is simply hilarious as he guides us through the very best of his best of his massive collection of flea-market found Kodachrome slides.

"I'm especially looking forward to doing my show in Pasadena," says Charles. "I'll be including some amazing vintage slides of Pasadena - including outrageous Rose Parade floats - that I've never shown before!

Audiences from coast to coast are delighted by Charles' stylish suits, friendly personality and infectious enthusiasm as he puts his unique spin on kitschy and classic Southern California design and style in "Charles Phoenix's Southern Californialand." Your imagination will be inspired and your spirit will soar!

Dear Readers,

atti rockinn.JPGI sooo want to get in mommy's convertible and enjoy the sunshine! Maybe she'll take me to McGinty's Gallery at the End of the World this weekend, as I know that's what's in her calendar.

The show features work by more than 25 emerging and established artists, live entertainment, tasty refreshments, good conversation and more. The gallery will be open noon-6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday with some special events too.

1st Friday Art Club is 7 p.m.-1 a.m. Friday night. You can see all of the interesting art, plus catch performances by Redwood Stills, Almase Arabesque (my mommy's belly dancing duo~ they use swords -- oooo scary!), drummer/actor Ric Sarabia and a few other drummers, who will join in playing for my mom. $5 cover.

Saturday is potluck barbecue day. Bring a dish to share and enjoy music by Vise Virsa. Cool grooves, yummy eats and new friends.

Sunday brings an almost-repeat of Saturday, but with a brunch and entertainment TBA. Your favorite dish to share welcomed.

 The gallery is at

2475 Lake Ave.

(cross street is Mariposa, venue is next door to Rancho Bar)
