It’s Doo Dah time~ where’s my dress?!

I have opened the big closet door and been rumaging through my rows of Regal clothes to find the just-right outfit to judge the Pasadena Doo Dah queen tryouts Sunday. You can’t wear just any old thing, it has to be the perfect old thing… or new thing… or mixture of things.

The attire for my Royal outtings usually falls in the latter category and often reflects my love of dance and music.. and bold colors, as the correct hue for the occasion is also a must.

I’m sure I can pull together something suitable, but what about you?

Will you be fit to be seen by former Doo Dah queens or to try to become the 2012 queen yourself?

Find out by coming to the tryouts and party 3 p.m. Sunday at the American Legion in Pasadena (see posts below for details).

And don’t be shy~  ask me what I think of your attire and tell me what you think of mine!

Ann Erdman named Doo Dah Parade Grand Marshal

ANN ERDMAN WILL LEAD 35TH DOO DAH PARADE AS ITS GRAND MARSHAL

Ann Erdman, soon-to-be retired Public Information Officer for the City of Pasadena, will serve as Grand Marshal of the 35th Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade. Erdman marks her 18th year of service in the City’s Public Affairs Office after coming from Palm Springs where she served under then Mayor Sonny Bono.

Ann has been a part of the Doo Dah experience for years. In 1996, she spontaneously became the event’s “official” pace car when, stricken with a case of walking pneumonia, she led the Parade in a hastily decorated wheelchair. Since then she has led marchers as a flower child, a motorcycle mama, baby in a giant high chair, Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz, captain of industry, and Elvis. Ann would never know how she would be costumed until just minutes before the parade rolled.

Upon being notified of her selection, Ann was literally speechless then uttered, “Oh my God!” several times. Recently, Ann was given a surprise opportunity by friends to ride on the Kiwanis float of the ‘Other Parade’ and said she was every bit as floored when Doo Dah came calling. “This is a wonderful way to celebrate as I wind down my career!” she said. “Our city considers itself artistically rich, and Doo Dah proves that the arts don’t have to be stuffy to matter!”

Parade organizer Tom Coston says Erdman has all the qualities a Doo Grand Marshal should possess. “If there’s anyone who walks to the beat of her own drum and appreciates a good laugh-it’s Ann!” he explains. The new Grand Marshal will lead hundreds of Doo Dah marchers and revelers on Saturday, April 28th, stepping off at 11am in East Pasadena. The Doo Dah Parade actually makes a loop on Colorado Boulevard and is the first parade in the country to move in opposite directions at the same time!

Last year, dozens of inventive, if zany, art cars and floats accompanied a legion of frolickers past the mom-n-pop shops along East Pasadena’s shady tree-lined streets, including many first-time entries like the League of Steam, Machina Candeo, Conehead Rocket Sled, Hippie Cream, Easy Acres Chicken Sitters, Wisdom Arts Laboratory, combined bands of the 35th Dragoon Guards, Mile High Bed, Cheesus Chrust Pizza Company, 2011 Queen Red Rosie, Balkan Brass Band, and the Ladies Auxiliary for Cultural Enrichment, et.al.

More about the Tryouts: Individuals of all genders, shapes, ages, and persuasions tested their fate to become queen. Contestants are usually outnumbered by equally-costumed judges, who include many former queens, and another hundred or so parade entrants, tryout supporters, Legion members, and the curious public. The town-hall setting with long tables in beer-fest style, crock pot chili, and legendary Doo Dah House Band, Snotty Scotty and the Hankies on stage, set the mood for the lively caucus. Among those who have perennially tried out are, Count Smokula, Santa’s Bad Elf, belly dancer, Narayana, a smoking Amy Winehouse, Queen Mother Teresa Kennedy, the Swami from El Monte, Sabrina the Stimulus Package, Second-Hand Rose Queen, Crystal, Gopher Girl, Buffy the Dog, Ms. Laurel, Pinball Lizard, Mama “J”, and Miss Boy Frances. Queen Eric(a) Valentine, of Glendale was a show stopper in 2010 with his searing guitar licks. Last year, Judges selected Red Rosie, a 17-year old who transformed from school girl to Wonder Woman in seconds while singing a Kaye Star song. Other favorites have included Roobie Breastnut, former burlesque star, as Sarah Palin, Crystal Lightner, local diva of Altadena, and Jezzelynn on stilts.
Even More Info on Queen Tryouts: Organizers staged the first public tryouts in 1998 at a Gothic house on stilts. It then moved to the famed Zorthian Ranch, in Altadena. This and other parodies of Pasadena’s ‘Other Parade’ have fueled Doo Dah’s colorful and controversial life on Colorado Boulevard. The 35th Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade will be held on Saturday, April 28th stepping off at 11:00am on the streets of East Pasadena. To enter the parade simply go to the website and fill out a form, or call for more information on Tryouts or Entries (626) 590-1134, or Public Information Number: (626)590-7596.
