Be a part of the Doo Dah Parade

I know it's early, but I want to make sure you don't miss out on a fun opportunity!

The Gallery at the End of the World will again be sponsoring the Queen of Arts float, also known as the Very Outgoing Queen entry, in the 33rd Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade on Sunday, Jan. 17.

Artist Dave Lovejoy has offered to man the helm for a second time, lending his amazing talents to come up with an extraordinary float design to properly fete outgoing Queen Skittles.

Here's where you come in:

The Gallery at the End of the World is seeking people to help work on the float over several weekends. No art experience is necessary, just a good attitude. Dates to be determined, but definitely in the latter part of December and early January.

People are also invited to be part of the entry on parade day, Jan. 17. You will can wear whatever costume you like and may walk, bicycle, skateboard, rollerskate or travel down the route with us in any non-motorized fashion you desire. Props relating to the entry will be provided for you.

The Gallery is also especially seeking percussionists and other people with a penchant for rhythm~ we want to make some noise as we travel the route! Some instruments will be provided.

For more information and to get on our e-mailing list so you can receive updates on the Queen of Arts float, drop me an e-mail at michelle.mills@sgvn.com Indicate GATOW float in the subject line.

Doo Dah float designer Dave Lovejoy's art installation leaving

Dave Lovejoy is one of the most creative artists I know, but then, I'm partial. Dave was the designer and chief artist for the Gallery at the End of the World's float in this year's Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade. The very same float that served as my outgoing Queen entry! ~ the awesome and amusing castle on wheels.

If that doesn't intrigue you, you may recall that I took a class in Raku pottery earlier this year and created two very cool vessels. Well, he was my teacher. ... Yes, a man of many, many talents....

The weekend of the upcoming ArtNight Pasadena, October 9-11, will be the last opportunity to see Dave Lovejoy's "Bouble Vision" art installation in the courtyard at 88 N. Fair Oaks. Ave, Pasadena.

Being a celebrity has its issues and one of them is dealing with the paparazzi, but what if the paparazzi is the celebrity?

Queen Skittles exhibited some of her work at the Gallery at the End of the World's Group Show two weeks ago. During the event, she took time to step out of the spotlight and capture some of the fun. Here's a link to her photos from the four-day event:

Welcoming a new princess

Hello dear readers,

Mommy's busy and her blog looked like it needed some words of wisdom from a certain little dog, so here I am. But I have BIG news!! After a long wait, my new - or should I say mew? - friend Mia is finally home and word is that she is a perfect princess.

Several months (about 180 kibble dishes in dog years) ago my human friend Vernor was taking a walk when he heard frantic cries. He looked around and discovered a dirty, skinny kitten hiding under a bush. He checked to see if her mother might be near, but there was no sign of her nor any of her siblings. Vernor picked up the nameless kit and she clung to him for all it was worth. She was scared, but friendly.

Smart man he is, Vernor took the kitten to his veterinarian to be checked out. She was quite young and would need lots of TLC, plus lots of feedings. Vernor enlisted the help of a rescue organization to help care for her and on Monday they said she was big and healthy enough to go home! Yay!

Mia, as the kitten has been dubbed, is now learning to get along with Vernor's other cats, Tasha and Goldie. She is eating well and is a "cuddle monster." My mommy reminded Vernor not to forget his other cats while giving out attention just because Mia has that "new cat smell" lol! He promised and I believe him, as he has a big heart and is one of my fans.

Best wishes to Mia on her new forever home!

Paws up,

July 4th tips from the Royal Pup and the ASPCA

I'm a Yankee Doodle Doggie, but I still get quite nervous when all those fireworks start going off. I also know that I'm not alone. In fact, my best friend Indiana Bones ended up in the
animal shelter after a 4th of July weekend. His family never came for him, which is very sad, but he was adopted into a new forever home and is loved, which is awesome.

Indy still cowers at the sound of the pops and bangs. It's funny too because he is a Belgian Malinois and is supposed to be brave. Still, I can't laugh because I'm trembling myself. And I'll bet your pets aren't too thrilled either. That's why I'm sharing this:

The ASPCA recommends keeping your pooch indoors as much as possible during backyard parties and Fourth of July festivities, even if he is a pro picnicker. From toxic food and beverages to raucous guests and fireworks, the holiday weekend is a minefield of potential pet problems.

"Even the most timid dog can leap a six-foot fence if he's spooked by loud noises," says Dr. Pamela Reid, Vice President of the ASPCA Animal Behavior Center.

If your dog shows signs of distress from fireworks or boisterous revelers, Dr. Reid suggests giving him a Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter.

"The persistent licking should calm his nerves," she says.

The ASPCA offers some more expert advice to keep your pet singing, "Oh Say Can You See," all the way to the fifth and beyond:

- Keep your pet on the wagon. Since alcohol is potentially poisonous to pets, place all wine, beer and spirits well out of paws' way.

- Avoid scraps from the grill. Stick with your pet's normal diet-- any change, even for a day, can result in stomach upset. Certain foods like onions, avocado, chocolate, grapes and raisins are especially toxic to pets.

- Skip the sunscreen. Avoid lathering your pet with any insect repellent or sunscreen not intended for the four-legged kind. Ingestion can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy.

- Stay fire-smart. Keep your pet away from fireworks, matches, citronella candles and lighter fluid, which if eaten can irritate the stomach, lungs and central nervous system.

- Be cool near the pool. Don't leave pets unsupervised around a pool or lake-- not all dogs are expert swimmers! Also, pools aren't large water bowls-- they contain chlorine and other toxic chemicals that can cause stomach problems.

As always, if you suspect your pet has ingested something poisonous from the picnic table, please contact your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

For more information and tips, visit www.aspca.org

I hope I get a nice peanut butter Kong every day over the weekend!

Have a safe and happy 4th of July and paws up,

Such is my assignment Friday when I will be heading to the Fairplex in Pomona for the 15th Vans Warped Tour.

There will be tons of bands and other entertainment, as well as vendors and lots and lots of music fans. If you see me, please don't hesistate to come up and say hello. But common sense - and the weather - in mind, you probably won't find me in my rocker gear, rather something practical with sleeves to avoid sunburn, plus a hat.
