Say hello to fourth place and get COMFY.

Ducks lose to the Sharks, 2-1, and don't get a shot on goal the ENTIRE THIRD PERIOD. If you were watching at home, you witnessed a bit of history: The Ducks haven't had zero shots in a period since Dec. 27, 2000 against Dallas, and have NEVER had zero shots on goal in a third period, ever.

Jonas Hiller did admirably stepping in for Jean-Sebastien Giguere at the last minute – it's not clear why Giguere didn't start, but perhaps Randy Carlyle will divulge the reason after the game.

The loss moves the Sharks a full seven points ahead of the Ducks for second in the Western Conference, which isn't mathematically impossible for the Ducks to overcome, but it's darn close. Dallas is three points back in the No. 5 hole. Ilya Bryzgalov has been playing poorly lately, so they might draw Mikael Tellqvist tonight against the Coyotes in Phoenix. They'll need to show up either way if they want to hold on to 4th.

About J.P.

J.P. Hoornstra has been covering the Anaheim Ducks since 2007. Eight months after the University of Wisconsin won its third NCAA hockey championship, he was born in a frigid Madison winter. He betrayed his blue-blooded beginnings by graduating from UCLA in 2003, and welcomes any and all dialogue on the finer points of hockey.
