Moving Sutherby clears up a couple pictures for the Ducks. He was one of two fourth-line centers along with Ryan Carter, and Carter had recently upgraded his value by playing well between Bobby Ryan and George Parros. Carter was younger and faster than Sutherby, had recently signed a three-year contract, and was a viable second- or third-line backup option (and better in the faceoff circle). Sutherby was not, although he could play all three forward positions, and had just as many goals as Carter (3) and a solid plus-6 rating.

The move also clears up $700,000 in salary-cap space — not a lot in the grand scheme of things, but the Ducks had been within $500,000 of the cap ceiling, which limited their ability to recall AHL players for short-term injury replacements.
