Sports Illustrated's Bobby Ryan feature on stands now.
I bumped into Michael Farber at practice at Anaheim Ice last week, which could only mean one thing: The Ducks were getting a moment in Sports Illustrated. It came this week.
Specifically, it was reigning NHL Rookie of the Month Bobby Ryan. The first part of the story gives the usual treatment - from Possible Draft Bust to Possible Rookie of the Year. The end, however, an in-depth look at Ryan's unusual upbringing that some of you might be unfamiliar with.
In short: Both he and his father were originally named Bob Stevenson. In 1998 his father, facing charges in New Jersey of assaulting his mother, jumped bail and the family moved to Hermosa Beach. They changed their name to Ryan because of the movie "Saving Private Ryan." His father spent some time in jail, but eventually reconciled with his wife ... and son.
It's not up on SI.com yet, so look for it at the grocery store if you don't already subscribe.

J.P. Hoornstra has been covering the Anaheim Ducks since 2007. Eight months after the University of Wisconsin won its third NCAA hockey championship, he was born in a frigid Madison winter. He betrayed his blue-blooded beginnings by graduating from UCLA in 2003, and welcomes any and all dialogue on the finer points of hockey.
