On his third-period penalty:
In that situation, it’s a dumb time to pick your stick in and it caught us. I take full responsibility for that one. I was just trying to make a play, but trying to do too much. With 10 minutes to go in the game, it’s not the best time to take that penalty.

On the series:
They are the best team in the league for a reason. We are still in the driver’s seat and have another game here on Thursday. We are still in great position. We have to use that home-ice to our advantage. If we come out like we did in San Jose, we’re going to be all right.

We just weren’t mentally as sharp as you need to be in a big game like this. It was a few little mistakes and that is all it takes. It’s a very fine line. We gradually got back to our game as the game went on, but it was just not enough. We have to do the best we can in the situation we’re in. Rebounding after this game now is what we have to do.

On San Jose’s power play:
They made some plays on the power play. You’re not going to stop them from scoring forever. They have a lot of talent out there. We’re going to have to probably look at the tapes again and maybe make some adjustments. When you get into a playoff series like this, it’s a game of adjustments.

It took a while for us to get our feet underneath us in the hockey game. It seemed like we were battling back all night. For the last 10 minutes of the second period, we seemed to get the game going and the shot total got a lot closer than it was previously. We didn’t generate much from a standpoint of offensive-zone time and we turned the puck over far too many times.

For tonight, we took a penalty late in the middle of the third period and it caught us. I think that we didn’t play to the level that we’ve played in the two previous games. I just don’t think we were happy with our team game in a lot of areas. It wasn’t like they didn’t try. They just didn’t execute.

On game:
You never want to go down 3-0 in a series. So we came out and kept sticking with it. Our power play was better tonight. We got guys to the net, we got pucks, we got the second and third opportunities that we’ve been talking about through the first two games and we were able to put them in.

On second and third opportunities in front of the net:
It was winning the battles in front of the net and getting the guys moving their feet. We wanted again to put a lot of shots and a lot of pressure on their goalie and their defense. Pucks were everywhere and it just getting to the paint and win those battles. I think Danny (Boyle) snuck in a couple of times and got a back door with just some loose change laying around. It’s what we’ve been talking about through the first two games and that’s what we wanted to do. Eventually it was going to happen.

On the series:
We needed the win. We knew what we needed to do going into the game. It’s good to get the win, but again you can never get too high or too low in the playoffs. Everyone always says that. Enjoy tonight, come tomorrow to practice, refocus and get ready again for Thursday.

On first period performance:
I thought we had our best first period that we had, not only in the playoffs, but in a long time. That’s a sign that everybody not only on the ice but everybody on the other three lines and two sets of defensemen on the bench were feeding off of each other. Scoring first was good.

On Patrick Marleau:
It’s an interesting stat is that Patty (Marleau) since 2001 has had nine-game winning goals in the playoffs, which leads all NHL players. We’re excited for him to get that one tonight. We have held him accountable for his play over the last couple of games, and for him to come into this building and respond the way he did, is something we’re happy about. For he and the rest of the players, it can’t be a one-man thing.

On team defense:
Rob Blake and Dan Boyle contributed three goals between the two of them tonight. We’re happy with that offensive production from them and they did a good job getting the puck to the net. I thought that in our own zone, they played extremely well too. Doug Murray was very physical early in the game. As a group, we haven’t been overly concerned about our back end as much as our forwards. They did a good job again tonight.
