Wisniewski elects for arbitration.

Restricted free-agent defenseman James Wisniewski has elected to go to salary arbitration with the Ducks.

Under the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, Wisniewski and and a team representative must appear before one of eight pre-appointed Arbitrators, who will hear arguments from both sides to determine the defenseman’s salary for the upcoming season. The hearing is scheduled to take place between July 20 and August 4 in Toronto, but a specific date hasn’t been set yet.

One thing is for certain: Per the CBA, the two sides can only agree to a 1- or 2-year contract in arbitration. Many cases, however, are settled prior to the arbitration hearing. The Ducks haven’t had a player go to arbitration since 2003, when Ruslan Salei won his case and got a raise of $650,000.

Wisniewski, 25, had three goals and 24 points in 48 games last season, including one goal and 11 points in 17 games with the Ducks after he was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks. In the playoffs Wisniewski contributed a goal and two assists in 12 games. He missed a second-round game against the Detroit Red Wings after suffering a lung contusion when he was struck in the chest with a puck.
