Where art thou, Rob Niedermayer?
Rob Niedermayer is still working out at home in British Columbia, according to brother Scott, hoping for his phone to ring sooner rather than later. Playing in Europe is Plan B, but "he'll wait as long as he can. He'd like to play in North America," Scott Niedermayer said.
Rob, 34, is not alone among veterans with serviceable skills but no contract. Michael Peca, Miroslav Satan, Kyle McLaren, Kevin Weekes and Maxim Afinogenov (to name a few) are no older than 35, but are playing in the wrong era: The salary-cap era.
"The teams that would like to sign a guy like that are right up against the cap," Scott Niedermayer said.

J.P. Hoornstra has been covering the Anaheim Ducks since 2007. Eight months after the University of Wisconsin won its third NCAA hockey championship, he was born in a frigid Madison winter. He betrayed his blue-blooded beginnings by graduating from UCLA in 2003, and welcomes any and all dialogue on the finer points of hockey.
