News and notes from practice.
Without Sunday's cuts (Trevor Smith, MacGregor Sharp, Timo Pielmeier, Jake Newton, Stephane Veilleux), the light at the end of the tunnel that is opening night was visible at today's practice (a long one, following a day off Sunday). The forward combos were significantly pared down:

• According to TSN.ca, center Trevor Smith was placed on waivers.
• Nine defensemen were on the ice - all the healthy players and no Toni Lydman, who still hasn't been cleared to skate or practice. When he is cleared, "you'll see him out there," Randy Carlyle said.
• The power-play units looked the same as they have lately. On the first unit, Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne stayed down low; Bobby Ryan, Lubomir Visnovsky and Ryan Getzlaf rotated between the point and the half-wall. Maxime Macenauer (more on him in a future blog) got a look centering the second unit, between Jason Blake and Dan Sexton. Danny Syvret and Cam Fowler manned the points.
• Carlyle on Veilleux: "He had a real good start, and wasn't able to maintain that level of physicality. In the game, he would have to come in here and out-compete out-battle someone ... and he wasn't doing that."
