Francois Beauchemin was the only Ducks player who did not participate in practice Thursday, but head coach Randy Carlyle said the defenseman would be available for Game 2 tomorrow at Honda Center.

“Beauch is resting, what we call a maintenance day. He will skate tomorrow morning and he’s available to us tomorrow night,” Carlyle said.

Beauchemin is dealing with a lower-body injury, the result of blocking a shot during the regular season. “It’s just taking a little more time to heal,” he said. “I’ve been taking medicine for it, and painkillers and stuff. It’s good on game days but on practice days it’s tough to get out there and force it.”

The Ducks’ bigger question is in goal.

The state of the Dan Ellis/Ray Emery two-party system will be the focus of tomorrow’s notebooks. Emery is healthy, while Ellis is healthy but coming off a poor start in Game 1.

Jonas Hiller wasn’t perfect in practice but looked better than he had in recent days. “Today was actually pretty good,” he said. “I thought I saw the puck pretty well. Hopefully there will be a couple more like it. … Yesterday and the day before, I felt pretty bad. I don’t really know what’s coming up every day. That’s the tough part.” Another “good day” might make him a candidate for backup duties, but even that would have to be considered a reach at this point.

Finally, there’s this justifiably long-winded quote from Carlyle after I asked him if he noticed anything new after reviewing film of Game 1: “No, I think that our assessment was pretty much bang on, as far as where we were negligent in more than one area … the execution with the puck, not winning enough 1-on-1 battles, not being inside, not having enough traffic in front of Rinne, and accepting being boxed out. We just didn’t manage the puck really well. The number of times we had offensive chances, we missed glorious opportunities. We missed key assignments. We mishandled the puck in neutral ice, which led to a goal against. We misread a faceoff play off the forecheck in the offensive zone in which we gave up our third guy, gave up a goal on it.”

In short, Carlyle found room for improvement.
