Green, Macenauer to AHL; opening-day roster takes shape.

Josh Green and Maxime Macenauer were assigned to AHL affiliate Syracuse on Monday, making them the final cuts of training camp. The Ducks have 26 players on their roster, but three (Toni Lydman, Joffrey Lupul, Jason Jaffray) are expected to start the season on injured reserve. That ought to bring Anaheim down to the league-maximum 23 active players two days ahead of the deadline.

It also clinches the team’s final forward positions for Dan Sexton and Troy Bodie, and eliminates the possibility of a third line centered by the 21-year-old Macenauer. Barring any moves between now and Friday’s season opener against Detroit, this is the team Randy Carlyle will ice against the Red Wings.

Going down the list of pre-camp questions, then:

Final roster cuts? Check.
Team captain? Ryan Getzlaf.
Team identity? Not yet.
Cam Fowler? In the NHL.
Bobby Ryan? Probably a left wing again.

There are still plenty of challenges in store – namely solidifying the defense pairings and finding three scoring lines – that Carlyle probably would like to have nailed down by now.

The Ducks’ final practice in Anaheim is tomorrow, and the team leaves Wednesday for Detroit.

Injury updates. Update.

The biggest news from the Ducks trainer’s room pertains to a player who has been M.I.A. since camp started: Joffrey Lupul.

The forward wrote on his Twitter account earlier today that he has been cleared to skate. The exact quote: “After 10 mons I
just got Medical clearance to start skating again. Gonna need a cpl
months to get back in shape but I am ready for it!!”

*Update: False alarm. A team spokesperson confirmed that Lupul has not been cleared to skate yet. He’s only been cleared to resume working out – good news considering the extent of Lupul’s exercise regimen lately has been walking.

Lupul has been progressing from a recurrence of the blood infection he contracted last December, which ultimately ended his 2009-10 season.

Meanwhile, back at the rink …

Joe DiPenta took part in drills and the scrimmage at Anaheim ICE, having lost a couple teeth Sunday. Toni Lydman was back in the gym, but not back on the ice, as he progresses from a bout of double vision.

Murray: ‘It’s a good fit for them and a good fit for us.’

Ducks general Bob Murray said he wasn’t sure that Jean-Sebastien Giguere was headed for Toronto until 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

That’s how much of a whirlwind deal Sunday’s blockbuster was — mainly, according to Murray, because he was willing to trade his veteran goalie before Brian Burke was.

“I talked with (Toronto assistant) David Nonis and Burkie early in the year about this,” Murray said. “They didn’t feel it was the right time. All of a sudden, (Jonas) Hiller’s signed and I’ve got (Nonis) saying he’s interested in something. They had a much bigger deal going somewhere else (for Dion Phaneuf) and they wanted to tie everything together.

“It’s a good fit for Toronto. I think that Jiggy’s a perfect guy to be with The Monster (Jonas Gustavsson) and (goaltending consultant) Frankie Allaire. It’s a good fit for them and a good fit for us. It came together all in the last 24 hours.”

Lupul develops infection, out indefinitely.

Joffrey Lupul, who underwent surgery Dec. 17 to repair a herniated disc in his back, has developed an infection and is now out indefinitely. He was originally expected to miss 6 to 8 weeks, which projected to January 28-February 11.

A team spokesperson reports that Lupul is still expected to return to action this season. In 23 games to start the season, he had 10 goals and 23 points. His 10 goals are still tied for fifth on the team.

Minutes from Tuesday’s meeting.

On a night when Ryan Getzlaf missed his first game of the season — along with injured forwards Teemu Selanne and Joffrey Lupul — Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle had his work cut out for him Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild. Divvying up the time on ice was a challenge, but the end result was a 4-2 victory.

Lupul will have surgery Thursday.

Joffrey Lupul will have surgery tomorrow on a herniated disc in his back, a team spokesperson confirmed. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Robert Watkins at Marina Del Rey Hospital. If the surgery is successful, Lupul will be able to return to play in 6-8 weeks.

Lupul began suffering back spasms during the preseason, and attempted to play through the pain until Nov. 19, when he rested for two weeks before attempting a comeback on Dec. 4 in Minnesota. He played the next three games, scoring four goals, before experiencing numbness in his leg as a result of his back injections.

Surgery likely for Lupul.

Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said Tuesday that left wing Joffrey Lupul is likely to undergo surgery on his back.

“I don’t know if it’s 100 percent,” Carlyle said, “but it’s a probability at this point.”

Lupul was scheduled to undergo an MRI after missing Monday’s practice at Honda Center. He did not skate Tuesday, and Carlyle said the surgery has not been scheduled yet.

“The determination for that will be depending on the doctor’s schedule, when he’s available,” he said. “You’ll know when I know.”
