Glendale Says: Cut Water Use by 10%

via city of Glendale:

GLENDALE, California – The Glendale City Council last night adopted a resolution implementing Phase I of the City’s Water Conservation Plan which asks all Glendale Water & Power (GWP) customers to voluntarily reduce their household water usage by 10% or about 20 gallons per person per day. The Water Conservation Plan was adopted by the city in 1995.

Following the City Council action, GWP is now launching a public outreach campaign "Glendale, It’s Time to Save Water." The campaign encourages all residential and business customers to save water so that Glendale can meet its water conservation goal.

“California is experiencing one of the driest years on record, so we all have to start thinking about saving water and making it a new way of life,” stated Dan Waters, GWP’s Interim Director. “We have also issued a special edition of our Source newsletter that covers programs that can help our customers save water, and provide them a variety of water conservation tips so each household can meet that 10% goal.” The special edition of the Source newsletter will be mailed to customers on July 9th. Waters recently recorded a public service announcement that will start airing on Glendale’s Government Access Channel GTV6, encouraging customers to save water.

Some of GWP’s water saving tips include:

  • Turn off your faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving = Saves 6 gallons per day.
  • Use low-flow showerheads and cut showers by two minutes = Saves 15 gallons per shower.
  • Fix leaky faucets = Saves 20 gallons per day.
  • Don’t take baths = Saves 36 gallons (or cut the amount of water in the tub in half = saves 18 gallons).
  • Catch the flow of your tap water while you wait for the water to get hot = Saves 200-300 gallons a month.
  • Don’t wash driveways or walkways with water, use a broom instead = Saves 150 gallons with each washing.
  • Step on your grass, if it springs back, no need to water today = Saves 750 -1000 gallons per month.
  • Install a swimming pool cover = Saves 30 gallons per day.

While the intention is noble, I find these kind of "use x% less than last year" regulations tend to punish people who have been conserving all along.

Folks who've been wasting water could easily cut back 10%, whereas folks with low-flo faucets and bricks in their toilets will have a relatively more difficult time.

Instead, wasteful uses should be specifically identified and targeted.

You're on point on that one...I say if you're frugal already, keep it up. Let the Glendale water police punish those who deserve it!
