Groups Will Pay to Play
LAUSD plans to charge for use of school grounds
By Naush Boghossian, Staff Writer
Hundreds of nonprofit youth groups in the San Fernando Valley and across the city will have to pay to use LAUSD facilities and athletic fields starting in March.
Saying the Los Angeles Unified School District's lean financial outlook requires the move, Superintendent David BrewerIII will institute a three-tiered fee structure to offset annual facilities costs of $3.8million.
The move comes just two years after district officials abandoned similar efforts after a broad public outcry that it could force youth groups to cancel thousands of worthwhile after-school events.

Will Neighborhood Councils be a no fee group because it only requires interior space on LAUSD property? E-mail me back at nwncnews@dslextreme.com if you know the answer and on this blog!

We just don't care about kids anymore. These programs that use these fields have been a deterant for kids to avoid the lure of the streets for decades. They operate from year to year on budgets that can barely carry them through a season. Their fees already carry a burden on any family to allow their children to play. So who does the school board attack, the one's without a voice. These programs are run by volunteers who work 8 to 10 hours a day and then go to these organizations and volunteer more time. They take time and at times their own money to keep organizations afloat and fees reasonable. Now they have to ask families already tight on budgets to dig deeper into their pockets to pay for fields that for some odd reason have been neglected by their tax dollars. So here comes deep pocket adult leagues and club teams that will overtake these fields. Some clubs may survive but more will sink. To say that the Girl or Boy scouts are exempt and youth football is not is biased and prejudicial. The effects that a coach has on a young persons life is immeasurable and priceless. But who cares? The budget is saved! So when we begin to question the character, integrity and discipline of our youth today and tomorrow; just remember, the budget was saved!
