One Race to the Top bill fails

Sen. Bob Huff (R - Diamond Bar) responded to the Assembly Education committee vote today on SB X5-1, a bill jointly authored by Huff and Senator Romero (D - Los Angeles) and sponsored by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to make California competitive for federal education grants through the Race to the Top program.

The bill failed passaged by the Assembly Education Committee but granted reconsideration.

"I am disheartened by the action of Assembly Democrats today," said Senator Huff who serves as Vice-Chair of the Senate Education committee.  "This bill would have brought much needed funding and reform to our schools."

"Republicans and Democrats must work together to improve our schools and end the failed status-quo which has been protected by powerful special interests for too long. Parents, local teachers, and students want change and action."

The competing bill AB X5 8 did pass.

Currently, California is unable to compete for the much needed funds.  To be eligible for the "Race to the Top" funds California must adopt comprehensive reforms to its education system which align with federal guidelines.
