From Sen. Romero's desk:

Sen. Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, Chair of the Senate Education Committee, has been appointed to the newly created Joint Committee on the Master Plan for Higher Education by Senate President pro tem Darrell Steinberg.

She is one of 10 appointees, joining 10 appointed Assemblymembers in evaluating California's Master Plan for Higher Education, which was adopted in 1960 to provide a coordinated framework for the public higher education system.

"On the 50th anniversary of the state's Master Plan for Higher Education, we must renew our commitment to maintaining the best public education system in the world and put the framework in place to make it happen," said Romero (D-East Los Angeles). "Our UC, CSU and community college systems are critical for our state's success in the years to come, but they face major challenges from budget cuts. This committee will look at how we can ensure that higher education in California is accessible and affordable and that it prepares students for jobs of the 21st century."

The Joint Committee will review the current Master Plan to determine if it meets California's present and future educational and economic needs. This review will set a framework for funding priorities when funds become available to restore and increase the state's support for its colleges and universities. The committee's first meeting will be Dec. 7 at 9 a.m. in Room 437 of the Capitol building in Sacramento.
