CLAREMONT - The school district is expected to send out at least 30 preliminary layoff notices, a district official said.

They would be distributed equally to all instructional areas and would be mailed March 15, said Devon Freitas, assistant superintendent of human resources for the Claremont Unified School District.

The board will announce the number of layoff notices at its March 4 meeting, Freitas said.

"Definitely, there will be layoffs," she said. "But it's determining how many there will be and organizing the seniority list."

Joe Tonan, bargaining chairman of the Claremont Faculty Association and a fourth-grade teacher at Sumner Elementary School, said he is worried about possible furloughs and increases in class size.

"The Claremont Faculty Association hopes to work with the district in order to find ways to stop furloughs," Tonan said.

"We want to stop any possible furloughs so students can have 180 days of school and minimize any increases to class size," Tonan said.

The district has more than 6,860 K-12 students, according to the district Web site.

The March 15 meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the district offices, 170 W. San Jose Ave.
