Upland High School Junior Awarded National Environmental Grant
The National Environmental Education Foundation, in partnership with The Weather Channel, announced today that Kevin Dumler, a junior, is among 10 students nationwide awarded a grant to complete an environmental project.
Kevin will work alongside the Campus Environmental Club to create a composting program at the high school by recycling cafeteria food garbage and using the recycled materials in the gardens and flowerbeds planted around the school's campus.
Diane Wood, president of the National Environmental Education Foundation, praised the innovative projects, including environmental model homes, unique irrigation systems for organic gardens, recycling programs and litter awareness campaigns.
"Kevin is part of an impressive group of students demonstrating a commitment to coming up with solutions to problems that they see every day," Wood said. "Their ideas and their energy show a great deal of creativity and we're proud to support their efforts."
Kevin and the other nine grant winners will be featured on www.planet-connect.org, a site offering environmentally minded teens job and volunteer opportunities, information on careers and universities and social networking capabilities allowing them to share success stories and environmental tips with peers around the country and the world.
The 10 Planet Connect grant winners devised plans and created budgets for school or community-based environmental projects. All will participate in summer environmental internships in their communities. The grants were made possible with additional funding from the NBC Universal Foundation.
