Twelve of San Bernardino County's were granted admission to the California State Summer School for the Arts.

Upon graduation from the program the summer school program, students will be named California Arts Scholars. CSSSA has granted the students of San Bernardino County with more than $11,000 in  scholarship funds.

Celebrating its 24th year, the California State Summer School for the Art' mission is to nurture the next generation of artists and arts professionals in animation, creative writing, dance, film & video, music, theatre, and visual arts.

Through the application process, 600 students were chosen from among 1278 applications who will participate in the summer program.

The program offers an opportunity for students to spend four weeks in a creative laboratory studying and working with professional artists, writers and performers of national stature.

The program has trained more than 11,500 students from all 58 counties in California and beyond. Students who complete the program receive three units of California State University course credit and are presented with the Governor's medallion, the state's highest distinction for artistically talented students.

As mandated by legislation, the program must reflect the diversity in the state, and no student is denied admission solely because of an inability to pay tuition.

Nearly 40 percent of the students who attend the school each year receive partial or full tuition scholarships and nearly $4 million has been awarded to underserved students.

The Herb Alpert Foundation has committed $1.2 million in college aid through the Herb Alpert Scholarships for Emerging Young Artists Award Program.

Alumni of the program include actors Zac Efron, star of the High School Musical films and the recently released Me and Orson Welles, and Golden Globe recipient James Franco, featured in the Spiderman movies, Pineapple Express and Milk.

This year's session runs from July 10-August 6.
