High school students experience college life

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - Dozens of students attending A.B. Miller High School in Fontana got a taste of college life this week.

The students - all enrolled in an elective course called TEAM, which stands for Teacher Education Academy at Miller - received a five-hour tour Wednesday at Chaffey College.

"I want to go to college, but I never knew where to go, but now, Chaffey looks pretty good," Miller sophomore Terah Bautista said.

The Chaffey College Future Teachers Club and its adviser, Monica Alexander, guided the students throughout the visit.

The students stopped at classrooms to learn about subjects such as dance, science, anthropology and theater. They also participated in a question-and-answer panel as well as several presentations.

"Getting a degree is an important tool to have under your belt - it will make life a whole lot easier," said Diane Morton, a Chaffey College student and campus guide.

TEAM encourages students to become teachers but provides them with tools for almost any major.

As sophomores, TEAM students learn the basic skills of teaching, organization and speaking in front of a group.

Juniors develop a portfolio with a resume, letters of recommendations and cover letter.

Seniors prepare for the California Basic Educational Skills Test.

"Even though I want to be a pharmacy technician, this course has helped me to take responsibility for my own actions and taught me how to grow," said Miller junior Michelle Molano, 16.

It is never too early to start thinking about a career, she said.

"High school goes by so quickly," she said. "Being here today gives you an overview of what college is going to be like, and what kind of college you might want to go to."
