Candidates file nomination papers for school board seats

San Bernardino County board of education member David Stine will not seek re-election.

He has served the county for two decades.

"I have failed retirement three times and I feel after 21 years on the board it was time for me to give someone else the opportunity to serve the West End," said Stine, whose Area B seat serves the Alta Loma, Central, Etiwanda, Mt. Baldy Joint, Ontario-Montclair, and Upland Unified school districts.

"I have valued my time on the board and I hope I've made a contribution."
Maryanne Avila, Sherman Garnett, Bette Harrison, Robert Little and Rita Loof have filed for his seat.

The filing period for the Nov. 2 election closed for most races Friday, though in races where an incumbent does not file, it is extended until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

More than 30 Inland Valley school board seats will be up for grabs during the election.

First-time contender Josie Estrada appears to be the lone challenger against three long-time incumbents in the Chaffey Joint Union High School District, which has schools in Ontario, Montclair and Ranch Cucamonga.

Arthur Bustamonte has served on the Chaffey board for 15 years. Clyde Francisco has served for 13. Charles Uhalley has served for 33 years.

In the Cucamonga School District, Yolanda Reed is running against three incumbents.

"I've served on various committees that the district has to offer and my grandkids will be here for a while, so I wanted to lend my support," Reed said.

"I'm OK with running against the incumbents. They've done a good job and I just want to give my support."

Seats for current Cucamonga board members Henry Cowles, Laura Hendison and Elsie Millet are up for election on the November ballot.
