Red Ribbon Week has students, schools and law enforcement saying 'No to Drugs'

Community members, educators and students throughout the United States will unite this week for Red Ribbon Week and pledge to lead drug, alcohol and tobacco-free lives.

Red ribbons pinned to shirts and tied around tree trunks and to fences will symbolize the stand that participants have taken against smoking, drinking and doing drugs.

"Doing drugs will not get you a good job or a good education," said Julia Clabaugh, fifth-grader at David W. Long Elementary School in Fontana.
The awareness event started in 1986 after a Drug Enforcement Administration agent was killed by drug traffickers in Mexico.

Red Ribbons were worn and displayed nationwide to honor and remember people who have lost their lives in the battle against drugs and drug trafficking.

During the campaign - which started this past Saturday and concludes Sunday - many school districts and law enforcement agencies participate in school-planned activities to promote the importance of being drug free.

Long Elementary kicked off Red Ribbon Week on Friday with an assembly that featured Fontana police officers and a member of the department's canine unit.

Officers Jason Herreman and Katie Beebe talked to students about the importance of staying off drugs, while their dog Rino demonstrated his ability to sniff out drugs and weapons.

Schools also get the drug-free message to students with essay contests and pledge-signings.

"Showing students at such a young age is important, because it really gives them a chance to think twice about drugs and even who they're going to hang out with that might influence them to do drugs," said Irene Whightsil, Long Elementary parent and PTA Red Ribbon Week chairwoman.
