press release
University of Phoenix, the largest private University in North America, today announced that it has awarded 30 full-tuition scholarships to be used in pursuit of an undergraduate degree at University of Phoenix. This marks the fifth year of the University's Paying It Forward® Scholarship program which, to date, has awarded 150 full-tuition scholarships.
"Americans are struggling to make ends meet, ending the dream of a college education for many," said Dr. William Pepicello, University of Phoenix President. "University of Phoenix has proudly set aside millions of dollars in scholarships to help give more students access to the quality education they could not otherwise afford."
In 2006, in celebration of its 30th anniversary, the University launched the Paying It Forward® Scholarship program where thirty University alumni identified thirty deserving individuals who could change their lives and the lives of others through a college education. The University awards select recipients a full-tuition scholarship to pursue one degree in a program of their choosing at University of Phoenix.
In Ontario, University of Phoenix alumnus Edward Valle nominated his wife Veronica Valle for the Paying it Forward® Scholarship. The couple first met in elementary school, before marrying many years later. Veronica and Edward have four children together, and for the past 18 years Veronica has stayed at home caring for their family.
"Veronica put her career ambitions on hold so I could pursue my bachelor's degree," said Edward. "I am so excited that she has the opportunity to now pursue her own degree and a career outside of our family. Paying forward this scholarship is truly the greatest gift I could ever give to my wife."
"We are thrilled to congratulate Veronica Valle on this exciting opportunity," said University of Phoenix Western Region Territory Vice President, LeeAnne Herbold. "The Paying it Forward® Scholarship program allows the University to reward deserving individuals with access to quality, higher education that may not have been available to them any other way."
Scholarship recipients were nominated by alumni from University of Phoenix bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree programs and selected by the Paying It Forward® Scholarship committee consisting of representatives from University of Phoenix, including alumni.
