Students jump rope for health

FONTANA - East Heritage Elementary School students gave their hearts a jump start on Monday morning.

More than 600 students participated in the school's inaugural Jump Rope for Heart event and fundrasier. They spent about 45 minutes jumping rope to music and listening to facts about their hearts and heart issues.

"Did you know your heart is a muscle, and it pumps blood from your head to your toes every 60 seconds?" Principal Damita Walton said.
"Did you know every year 30,000 children are born with heart defects?"

The national program aimed to empower students to improve their own health while raising awareness about other boys and girls with heart-health issues, according to the American Heart Association.

East Heritage Elementary students collected more than $2,000 to be given to the American Heart Association for research.

"My heart was pumping really fast, and a lot of blood was rushing through my body, more so than ever before," said third-grader Molly Davis.

Students and teachers rotated through the four jumping stations - jump rope limbo, jumping over the rope, regular jump rope and partner jump rope - to maximize their morning lesson.

"I was all tired, but now I feel like, whoa, I want to do more," fourth-grader Alena Padilla said.

"I feel like I need to get out there and exercise more," fourth-grader Ariyana Padilla said.

"I feel strong," fourth-grader Isaac Tapia said.

Students at the Etiwanda School District school also wore red and pink on Monday not only for Valentine's Day, but also to remind themselves they need to get lots of exercise and have good nutrition to keep their hearts healthy, Walton said.

"There are some children who are born with heart defects and some kids who acquire it through poor nutrition and physical activity," Walton said. "I think what we're doing here today is getting the message out there that exercise is healthy, along with good nutrition."
