The event is designed to create public awareness of the value of colleges to their communities and to spawn corporate partnerships, philanthropic investments, and community involvement supporting all colleges and students statewide, according to a news release.
Beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, participants at colleges across the state will join hands.
Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga will be the hub for the Inland Empire, where more than a dozen college groups are expected to participate.
"This is all about unity and community and even though you don't know whose hand you're holding we know as a whole we're all standing together for the same cause," said Kendra Hinton, Chaffey College performing arts student.
The Foundation for California Community Colleges has partnered with Ken Kragen, architect of "We Are The World," "Hands Across America" and "NetAid," to create a "once-in-a-generation" event in support of community colleges and their students, according to a news release.
"Anyone can participate and any age - we welcome families and little ones too, so that way they are aware of how important college is," said Bill Hughes, San Bernardino Valley College political science major.
Hughes said he hopes the Hands Across California event helps the public be educated on how important it is to prepare students for the future.
"Our students are the future and without them we're going to be ill prepared and not be able to go against our global competitors," he said.
Sunday's event is expected to involve 1.5 million people across the state.
