Do drummers really get the chicks?
That's what Sharon Kaplan, features designer and pop-culture prognosticator, tells me -- lead singers and drummers get the chicks. I guess that leaves little for guitar and bass players. And she says tuba players have no luck.
That low, plaintive moan of the tuba? Come ON -- that's gotta work.
In any event, it made me think of my favorite drummers:
Rock
Keith Moon I'm not a big Who fan, but I just love the way he seems to hit every stinkin' drum every five seconds yet not lose the beat. I'm all about reckless abandon.
(I had more rock drummers, but none that leap out so far that I can name them without thinking, and there's NO THINKING ALLOWED in this entry)
Jazz
Gene Krupa -- He took the drum set to a new place in the swing era
Buddy Rich -- The guy was infectious, powerful (he hit the shit out of the set), and even though he's regarded as a major league asshole, the man could play. He set the bar for modern big-band drumming.
Elvin Jones -- From the classic John Coltrane quartet and about 10,000 other recordings. I like the story about how he had to wring the sweat out of his pants after a gig.
Of course drummers get the chicks. You've known me a long time Mr. Rosenberg, so you should know that by now.
