Pierce College Farm Walk is this Sunday

Don't miss Pierce College's annual Farmwalk, beginning 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The earlier and the cooler, the better, I say.

I adore Farm Walk. Too bad I missed it this year. Just completely forgot.

I've taken equine science classes at Pierce, and it's amazing. Just being able to work with and ride the horses is incredible. And so reasonably priced!

I encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to take agricultural department classes at Pierce. Even if you're done with school, you'll still benefit from them. You'll learn a lot, meet new people and have a lot of fun!

I haven't posted an entry on it, but Farm Walk wasn't so great this year. They're doing all kinds of work on the road that usually has lots of cool stuff. They're building curbs and sidewalks all along the road, and as a result didn't have the fire department, the tractor and other things they usually have there.

But on the brighter side, we did take our 4-year-old, as we do every year, and she got to pet all the baby goats, see the Dairy Council's cow exhibit (with real cow) and see the chickens and other animals.

We didn't have as much time as we have in the past, so we didn't do the whole walk (it's hard with a young child -- I usually do a lot of carrying), but the cloudy weather was great -- it can get hot, even in May, so a little overcast-ness is a very good thing when it comes to Farm Walk.

I especially liked seeing the hen house. The students who were there to explain everything were extremely helpful, and we learned a lot about laying hens and how they are cared for. One of the girls said a laying hen can live for 20 years, although egg production doesn't last anywhere near that long. In commercial poultry, the hens get only a couple of years before they get the ax.

I'd be nice to have a few chickens in the back yard -- even in the Valley. I'm considering it, all right.
