An apartment fire in Fontana displaced at least 16 people on Monday evening.

The fire was reported at 7:21 p.m. in the 9200 block of Wheeler Court, said San Bernardino County fire dispatch supervisor Karen Humpheys. Firefighters arrived and saw smoke and flames coming from the building.

Firefighters had the blaze under control at 7:54 p.m. There were no reported injuries.

The American Red Cross came to the scene to help three adults and six children find temporarily shelter elsewhere. Residents in another apartment were also displaced due to water damage.

Fontana police are conducting a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint Saturday evening.

The checkpoint will be from 6 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at the corner of Base Line Road and Americana Way, police said.

The California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, provided a grant for the operation.

Robbers on Monday night punched and kicked a 50-year-old Fontana man when he told the group he didn't have any money, police said.

The victim suffered cuts to his face but was not hospitalized.

He was walking near the corner of Citrus and Dorsey avenues at 8 p.m. when four or five men approached him. They attacked him after they demanded money and the victim said he didn't have any, police said.

The men snatched the victim's cell phone and wallet before running from the area.

Police arrested Gilberto Huerta, 23, of Fontana, on suspicion of robbery. The other men escaped.

The Auto Club Speedway will not use Metrolink's charter train service during the Pepsi 500 Weekend in October.

Officials cited the economy for the shift in policy.

"We hope at some point the financial model will again make sense," said Speedway President Gillian Zucker. "But with the current economic downturn, there is very little demand for a service, no matter how convenient, that charges between $20 and $35 per person to ride the train, especially when on-site parking is free and plentiful. It just doesn't make sense."

Fontana police found a man shot to death Sunday night.

Coroner's officials have identified the victim as 20-year-old Luis Antonio Razo-Ramirez, whom police say is a suspected gang member

"We believe it is gang related," said Sgt. Jeff Decker.

Residents called 911 about 9:30 p.m. and reported hearing shots fired in the 9000 block of Chantry Avenue. Officers arrived to find Razo-Ramirez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the face and body.

The shooters are believed to have fled in a dark colored sport-utility vehicle.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Fontana Police Dispatch at (909) 350-7700.

The U.S. Geological Survey said in a preliminary report that the magnitude-3.3 temblor struck Friday at 1:53 a.m.
