A Sheriff's deputy, who was nabbed during an internal investigation into deputies taking drugs and money from suspects, appeared today in Superior Court.

Jeffery Ryan Karp, a 36-year-old deputy assigned to the Fontana station, is charged with drug possession after a hidden camera showed him pocketing 71 Vicodin pills during a Feb. 11 hotel-room sting in Redlands.

Karp is currently on administrative leave from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

The defendant appeared briefly in San Bernardino Superior Court and is scheduled to return Aug. 5 for a status hearing. He is out of custody on his own recognizance, according to court records.

Karp has worked for the Sheriff's Department since July 1999. He was charged June 9 and has pleaded not guilty to one count of possessing a controlled substance.

The defendant has told deputies "he was under a physician's care and received a prescription for methadone to assist him cure a self-described addiction to pain medications," according to investigators.

Victim of Fontana Cops said:

This doesn't suprise me at all...Fontana cops are as crooked as they come and its courts are a joke if you're looking for fair treatment! I knew this dude, David M., a D.A.R.E. officer for the schools, who was fired for falsifying evidence which led to a number of convictions. The sad thing is he told me he was expected to by his superiors because of shoddy police work! My own legal problems stemmed from a Fontana officer's police report that had no less than TWELVE mistakes and outright lies, not to mention his PERSONAL opinion about who I was which was completed biased and unsubstantiated by any fact whatsoever! Then the way the inept DA, Simon Umscheid, handled my case was a direct result of the report, which was the difference between a felony and a misdemeanor! Both Fontana's cops and courts are more interested in their own agendas that have nothing to do with justice or administering the law in a professional manner and getting convictions regardless of the circumstances or truth is their main priority! Do yourself a favor and give Fontana and its failed justice system a wide berth!
