From Mike Cruz, The Sun's courts reporter:

A 30-year-old laborer from San Bernardino was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years to life in state prison in the carjacking, kidnapping and rape of a Fontana teenager two years ago.

San Bernardino police say the defendant, Jose Guadalupe Alvarado, ambushed a carload of teenage girls at a Highland Avenue gas station with what appeared to be a gun on July 20, 2007. He took the female driver to a remote area of Temecula, forced her to disrobe and raped her.

Alvarado pleaded guilty in June as part of a plea bargain to 14 felony counts, which included carjacking, kidnapping, rape, oral copulation and robbery, according to court records.

The victim read a statement at the sentencing hearing Tuesday in San Bernardino Superior Court. Prosecutors say she was willing to testify at trial and wanted Alvarado to get the maximum amount of time.

"He received about 11 years less than if he had been convicted at trial," said Deputy District Attorney Joanne Uhlman. She has no doubt Alvarado would have been convicted of everything at trial.

The agreement also spares the victim from having to testify about the sex acts forced upon her.

The defendant must serve about 29 years of the sentence before he can go before a parole board and seek release, Uhlman said. There is no guarantee he will ever receive parole, which he would have for the rest of his life.

Alvarado apologized to the young woman, who was 17 years at the time, at the sentencing hearing, lawyers said.

"He pretty much took responsibility from the very beginning, when he was arrested by the police," said defense lawyer Richard Carnero. "He was very remorseful for what he did.

"He just wanted to end it. He didn't want to put the victim through any more trauma," said Carnero.

Police arrested Alvarado in San Bernardino days after the attack.

At an earlier court hearing, detectives said Alvarado had threatened to kill the girl if she told anybody. He then left her on a roadside, where she was in tears when rescued by passing motorists.

Alvarado told officers he had been smoking speed and had drunk 18 beers when he found the girls. He said he initially planned to only rob the girls and take the car.

But "once he saw her naked in the passenger seat, he wanted to have sex with her," Detective Anthony King testified at January 2008 hearing.

Alvarado told the victim he was facing a prison sentence and was trying to get to Mexico, according to detectives.
