Friday night review

If was a little more ambitious, I would have posted this blog entry a little earlier today.

Oh, well . . . here come my thoughts on the CIF Southern Section football action that took place Friday night:

The biggest surprise . . .Some might suggest it was Compton's 27-20 Pac-5 upset of Sunset League co-champion (and No. 4 divison seed) Esperanza.

But I would disagree. In my estimation, the biggest stunner was unbeaten Suburban League champion (and the division's top seed) Mayfair losing to West Covina, 19-16, in the Southwest Division. It's the second consecutive early exit for the Monsoons, who were also a top seed a year ago before being handled by Valencia in the second round.

The most impressive defensive performance . . . What else but the one turned in by the Poly High Jackrabbits in shutting out (!!!!) Mater Dei, 10-0, in the best first-round Pac-5 matchup.

As good as coordinator Jeff Turley's defense is, I'd imagine that the Jackrabbits are going to need to score more than 10 points to beat the divison's top seed (Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks) next Friday night at Veterans Stadium.

Ugly overall performance by a league . . . Suburban League bags this one after going oh-for-four in the Southwest (besides the Monsoons, the Bellflower, Artesia and La Mirada teams were also one-and-done.

Most intimidating score . . . Dominguez 62, Morningside 0. Once again, only the Dons are capable of beating the Dons in the Western Division.
