OK.
As promised, here is my prediction for the 16-team bracket of the CIF Southern Section’s Pac-5 football playoffs. The “real match-ups will be unveiled at the section’s Los Alamitos headquarters Sunday.
Hopefully this will be more accurate than some of my final regular-season games projections earlier in the week, when I forecast Millikan over Wilson in the Moore League (wrong!), Los Alamitos over Edison in the Sunset (wrong again!) and, in a game that just wrapped up a half-hour ago at Saddleback College just a couple miles away from my Laguna Niguel abode, Santa Margarita over Servite (wrong once more!).
The Servite Friars really helped themselves, going from being projected wild card entrant to the top seed from the Trinity League and the No. 4 overall seed.
Ready, set . . . here we go:
UPPER BRACKET
No. 1 seed Notre Dame (10-0/Serra 1) home to Wilson (3-7/Moore 4)
No. 8 seed Edison (8-2/Sunset 2) home to Mater Dei (8-2/Trinity 4/WC)
No. 5 seed Poly (9-1/Moore 1) home to San Clemente (8-2/South Coast 2)
No. 4 seed Servite (7-3/Trinity 1) home to Los Alamitos (7-3/Sunset 3)
LOWER BRACKET
No. 3 seed Esperanza (9-1/Sunset 1) home to Dana Hills (5-5/South Coast 3)
No. 6 seed Orange Lutheran (9-1/Trinity 2) vs. Lakewood (7-3/Moore 2) FLIP FOR SITE
No. 7 seed Santa Margarita (8-2/Trinity 3) at Crespi (6-4/Serra 2)
No. 2 seed Mission Viejo (8-2/South Coast 1) home to Compton (7-3/Moore 3)
The Southern Section edicts of keeping league members from possible meetings with one another until the semifinals means that the four Trinity and four Moore teams have to be distributed one to every two first-round match-ups.
The other hard and fast guideline is that the 1 and 2 seeds from each league must be placed in opposite brackets (meaning they couldn’t meet until a championship game).
