Mater Dei Tourney . . . the update

There were several missing key players Friday. But, otherwise, the games were decent during the boys' basketball tournament at Mater Dei High.

Jordan Hamilton (in a traveling team tournament in New York) and Aaron Moore (recovering from a stress fracture in a foot) were absent for Dominguez High, as were Cameron Nettles (that same N.Y. tournament) of Gahr, Gary Franklin (Nike Hoops Jamboree in St. Louis) of Mater Dei and Michael Bostic and Tyler Lamb (St. Louis Nike event) of Colony.

Mater Dei, not surprisingly, was the most impressive team of the evening as 6-foot-9 twins Travis and David Wear -- looked quite buffed after a intense weight-training program this spring -- dominated in the team's 50-plus point victory over Crespi.

Gahr was in reasonable control throughout while knocking off Capistrano Valley by about a dozen or so points.

Dominguez, with the addition of point guard Dominic LaCoste (who enrolled last week after spending two years at Poly), knocked off Ediison by 57 points.

But the best game of the evening was, by far, the Santa Margarita-Los Alamitos clash. The Eagle pulled away down the stretch to win 60-49. Seniors-to-be Klay Thompson (dad Mychal, a former NBA player and now Lakers' commentator and 570 commentator, had camcorder in action) and Jaime Serna were outstanding for Santa Margarita.

Today's championship quarterfinal action:
4:30, Poly vs. Santa Margarita
6, Dominguez vs. Trabuco Hills
7:30, Mater Dei vs. Colony
9, Gahr vs. Ocean View

Action continues Sunday, beginning with consolation action at 9 a.m. The semifinals (if the seeds hold up, they will be Mater Dei-Gahr at noon and Dominguez-Santa Margarita at 1:30) should be intriguing. The title game is set for 7:30.
