Vegas wrapped

| | Comments (0)

After writing extensively on coaches' reactions to the death of Wake Forest's Skip Prosser, there were some trims on my Las Vegas notebook that left some of the results of the three tournament finals unclear.

Hopefully, the following will add some clarity.

Brandon Jennings & Co. needed overtime to beat Southeast Elite, 74-66.

According to multiple coaches' and media sources, Wake Forest basketball coach Skip Prosser died earlier this morning after an apparent heart attack suffered while jogging near camp in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Two advance in Reebok

The Reebok tournament is shaping up as having a distinctive Southern flavor.

It's a little after 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday and I'm sitting courtside in the Durango High gymnasium, watching Main Event games in las Vegas. You're not missing much . . .

Monday, Monday

Sorry for not blogging Monday, folks . . . I was to busy watching basketball to do much else other than breath and drive from gym to gym.

Brandon bangs it in

OK, more action from both Foothill High (Rebook event) and the Cox Pavilion (kitty-corner to Thomas & Mack; for the adidas Super 64) . . .

The “showdown” between Renardo Sidney of Artesia High (“L.A. Dream Team”) and Delvon Roe of Cleveland St. Edwards (“King of the Court”) in the Reebok Summer Championships game at Foothill High in Henderson Sunday morning never came to fruition.

Fatigue is already setting in – maybe it comes from holding the programs from the Main Event, adidas Super 64 and Reebok Summer Championships in two hands while sitting on the edge of the seat in front of the desk in my Courtyard Marriott hotel room in Las Vegas late Saturday night, after only polishing off about four hours of sleep the night before.

The 49ers are looking in the mail -- the postal variety -- for a couple of signed scholarship agreements from community college candidates for Dan Monson's first team.

Well, Cox Pavilion is shaping up as the place to be on Sunday during the opening salvo of the three national-caliber (anyone notice how often I write “-caliber” at the end of words?) high school hoops tournament that get underway that day.

The Pump-N-Run Elite team was led by James Harden of Artesia a year ago when it rolled to the adidas Super 64 championship, whacking D.C. Assault (led by McDonald’s All-Americas Austin Freeman, Nolan Smith and Michael Beasley).

It’s no longer called the “Big Time Tournament” but there will be plenty of “big time” college prospects on hand at the Reebok-sponsored event, one of three national boys’ basketball traveling team tournament that get underway Sunday morning in Las Vegas.

The Fullcourt Press All-West Camp wrapped up Thursday evening at Lynwood High after three days. And, to no one's surprise, Brandon Jennings and Demar DeRozan were, at times, spectacular during the events Cream of the Crop, Top 25 game.

We're sitting in Rhodes Arena on the University of Akron campus, waiting for the final game of the LeBron James Skills Academy.

Truth be told, I'd like to bust out of here and head for the hotel right now but I'll stick around and toss out a few last thoughts on the Nike-fronted event.

If there were any remaining skeptics about Demar DeRozan’s status as one of the elite handful of high school basketball players in the country, the Compton High senior-to-be has been busy dashing them over the past couple of days during the LeBron James Skills Academy at the University of Akron.

The basketball-viewing action started for yours truly at 8 a.m. in Cincinnati, and wrapped up some 14 hours and 230 miles later in Akron.

In between, some future UCLA guards looked pretty good and a very well-known NBA player mixed it up with high school players who would like to be joining him for real a few years hence.

I strolled into the Fifth Third Arena (I think it gets its name from a bank or some other establishment), as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Friday as a Southern California resident can be at 5 a.m. Pacific Time.

But it was the first day of the NCAA basketball coaches’ summer evaluation period and if the likes of Ben Howland, Roy Williams and Bill Self could roll in at 8 a.m. Eastern Time, so could I.

The Nike 7 on 7 Passing Championships' field has been set, with the defending L.A. City champion joining the likes of Poly, Mater Dei and Edison for the July 13 football event at Veterans Stadium.

The UCLA basketball program, with back to back Final Four appearances and favored to appear in another next spring, isn't going to suffer any talent letdowns anytime soon.
