OK, more action from both Foothill High (Rebook event) and the Cox Pavilion (kitty-corner to Thomas & Mack; for the adidas Super 64) . . .
Dinos Trigonis’ Belmont Shore team beat the D-1 Greyhounds at Foothill, 79-75, in the most entertaining (I hesitate to use the word “best”; you’d have to be a veteran of watching these games to know what I’m talking about) I’ve seen today.
Jennings had a rather pedestrian first half, missing six or seven jumpers – badly.
But in the final 20 minutes he was nails, getting to the rim with the greatest of ease, picking off passes, setting up teammates (a ¾ length of the court bounce pass for lay-in couldn’t be executed better) and drilling jumpers of the mid-range and deep variety.
His 3 from the right win with about 15 seconds to go put Belmont Shore ahead and then Renaldo Woolridge (Harvard-Westlake) dropped in a couple of free throws after a steal for the final points with three seconds to go.
There was at least one other 2008 McDonald’s All-American in the game with Jennings (Oak Hill Academy, for those of you who haven’t noticed the 30 or so times I’ve written that in my Press-Telegrams columns or blog). And that was 6-4 William Buford (Libbey High in Toledo), who is one of the half-dozen or so best 2-guard prospects in the Class of 2008 I’ve seen this summer.
Oh, yes. Also playing for Trigonis’ team is future teammate of Jennings at the University of Arizona, 6-11 Jeff Withey (San Diego Horizon). He’s got immense potential.
Then I sprinted up the 95 Freeway to Tropicana to Cox Pavilion, where the big crowd in the parking lot wasn’t for the Pump-N-Run Elite vs. New Jersey Playaz but the intrasquad game involving the likes of fellows named Kobe and LeBron next door in Thomas & Mack.
The PNR team, which Mater Dei twins David and Travis Wear, UCLA-bound Jrue Holiday (Campbell Hall) and Jerime Anderson (Anaheim Canyon), and Taft point guard Larry Drew (who is committed to North Carolina) didn’t exactly play a cerebral affair, taking enough ill-advised shots, missing another free throws and committing enough critical turnovers (three of down the stretch in overtime) to lose, 90-88.
There is lots of writing to do tonight and Monday – and the rest of the month, for that matter – and not much time for sleeping.
But you already knew that.
