More like a nightmare

The “showdown” between Renardo Sidney of Artesia High (“L.A. Dream Team”) and Delvon Roe of Cleveland St. Edwards (“King of the Court”) in the Reebok Summer Championships game at Foothill High in Henderson Sunday morning never came to fruition.

That’s because Sidney never guard the 6-8 and Michigan State-bound Roe, and Roe guard Sidney (a junior) on just a few possessions in the second half.

But if the 6-9 Sidney is truly the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2009, as many believe, he didn’t look the part Sunday.

His play was sluggish, he rarely into the post, was quickly in foul trouble and he always seemed at least a half-step behind the action (offensively and defensively),

The left-handed Roe, on the other hand, played with a lot of energy, especially in the final 12 minutes or so when he dominated play at both ends of the floor.

But Roe wasn’t the best player I’ve watched so far today. That honor goes to 6-10 Eloy Vargas of Team Breakdown of Florida (American Heritage High in Plantation, Fla.). Billy Donovan stood just to the side of the court and it’s understandable why the Florida coach wanted to be visible. Vargas is apparently leaning toward signing with the two-time national champions.

And I got my first look at Brandon Knight, the 6-3 sophomore from Pine Crest in Coral Springs who also plays Team Breakdown.

He’s advertised as the best sophomore in the country and, although he’s not much of a jump shooter, he has every other tool you want to see in a point guard.
