It’s no longer called the “Big Time Tournament” but there will be plenty of “big time” college prospects on hand at the Reebok-sponsored event, one of three national boys’ basketball traveling team tournament that get underway Sunday morning in Las Vegas.
With Sonny Vaccaro (who owns the “Big Time” title) taking a break from the summer circuit, the event has been streamlined just a bit and is now called “Reebok Summer Championships” – that’s to the point – and its primary gymnasium of residence is still located at Foothill Hill in Henderson.
As has been the case the past couple of years under its old name, the Rebook event has a mini-tournament of sorts over the first two days involved its top eight seeds – the teams with the most high-profile future college talent.
Among those are L.A. Dream Team (led by Renardo Sidney of Artesia) and Belmont Shore (with a roster that is expected to include Brandon Jennings of Oak Hill Academy, Renaldo Woolridge of Harvard-Westlake and Jeff Withey of San Diego Horizon).
Belmont Shore opens Sunday at 1 p.m. (on Foothill’s main gym floor) against the D1 Greyhounds (O.J. Mayo’s former traveling team). The Dream Team is scheduled to go at 10:30 a.m. on the same floor against King of the Court, a team from Ohio that includes Michigan State-bound Delvon Roe.
I’ll be on hand for most of the early Sunday games before jetting over to Cox Pavilion (located nest to Thomas & Mack) for the adidas Super 64 contests involving that event’s best teams.
And remember to check this blog frequently for updates throughout all three events taking place in Las Vegas Sunday to Thursday . . .
