As someone (Yogi Berra) once uttered "It's not over 'til it's over".
Or something like that.
Take the Compton at Millikan football game, for example.
With the Tarbabes up 34-7 just 3 1/2 minutes into the third quarter Friday night, I thought was going to roll into their Moore League showdown with Poly next Friday evening.
So much for thinking . . .
The Rams, thanks in large part to some marvelous offensive execution and some sloppiness (and then some) with the football by Compton, scored three touchdowns and were within three yards of the fourth that would have tied the score before their own fumble ended their hopes of a stunning comeback.
Compton, 34-28.
Do the 8-0 Tarbabes have a decent shot at stopping the Jackrabbits' Moore League winning streak at 71?
Well, not if Compton is as carely with the football (it lost three of seven fumbles and saw a Bernard Griffin pass picked off), or as undisciplined (five major penalties in the second half) as it was against Millikan.
And the Tarbabes' defense is going to have to be much, much better than it was against the Rams in order to keep an improving Poly offense in check.
More high school grid thoughts:
*Millikan has dropped three consecutive decisions to Poly, Lakewood and Poly after a 5-0 start. The Rams have a non-league game against Roosevelt of Corona next Friday night but the more important clash takes place on Nov. 9. That's when they visit Cabrillo with the Moore League's fourth spot in the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 playoffs at stake.
*I've got mixed feelings on all of the cancellations and postponements that most of the leagues opted for in light off the blazes that devastated the Southland this past week.
I can understand concerns about air quality. But if concern for the kids' well-being was foremost in the decisions, what about those leagues (San Gabriel, Suburban and Sunset included) that will be playing games on Monday night, four days before most of the teams' next games?
*But, since they're doing it, how about what is in store for Los Alamitos?
The Griffins play at Newport Harbor Monday night, then get Esperanza Friday night at Veterans Stadium in a game that might decide the Sunset League championship.
"Might" is the key word, though.
Esperanza is one of three remaining unbeaten teams (with No. 1 Mater Dei and Compton) in the Pac-5 but has a very tough Sunset opponent to deal with Monday night in Edison.
*The Trinity is one of the leagues that flat out cancelled its games.
So that takes Mater Dei-St. John Bosco, JSerra-Servite and Orange Lutheran-Santa Margarita off the books.
That Orange Lutheran-Santa Margarita wasn't played could greatly impact the wild-card selection, and seeding, for the division's playoff bracket.
