In a game that had to be seen to . . . uh, never mind that tired cliche.
Mater Dei held on to beat Centennial Thursday night in Santa Ana Stadium, 51-37.
There isn't going to better high school football game played in Southern California this season.
The visiting Huskies had 683 yards in offense, 328 of those on 43 rushes by Ryan Bass, but Mater Dei's offense, which collected 590 yards, had too much balance.
By the way, junior quarterback Matt Barkley threw for 366 yards for Mater Dei and is every bit as good as the hype.
Interestingly enough, both teams could still play for state championships: Centennial in Division I and Mater Dei in Division III. Those classifications are based on enrollment.
Who beats Mater Dei this season? Maybe Orange Lutheran or Servite in the Trinity League. But no one else in the Pac-5 Division, that's for sure.
