I just finished a telephone conversation with 6-foot-9 Nick Shepherd, and the senior at Westbury Christian in Houston seemed excited about his future as a member of Coach Dan Monson's Long Beach State basketball program.

Shepherd, who committed to the 49ers Wednesday night, said the effort that Monson and assistant Eric Brown put into recruiting him since early July was a big factor in his decision, as was the reception he and his mother received when they visited the campus early last month.

His mother, Nyla Shepherd, is an accountant who coaches the volleyball team at Westbury Christian. She was volleyball standout at LSU who was recruited by Brian Gimmillaro and the 49ers' volleyball program when she was a prep star in Louisiana.

Check out more details in my story in Friday's Press-Telegram.
