As expected, the Big West Conference will announce later this afternoon that its men's and women's basketball tournaments will relocate from the Anaheim Convention Center to the Honda Center -- just a couple of miles east -- for the 2011 season.

The news met with positive response from Long Beach State men's coach Dan Monson.

"I think it's great,'' he said Tuesday morning. "Our league is making moves to upgrade itself, on and off the court. And the Honda Center is a venue that will enhance our tournament.''

Some details are still to be worked out. But it's expected that the the tournaments will be played in straight bracket formats (unlike the current format in which highest remaining seeds always play lowest remaining seeds, with the top two regular-season finishers getting byes into the semifinals).

The 2010 men's and women's tournaments -- the winners of which get automatic bids to the respective NCAA tournaments -- run March 10-13.
