Nike prep hoops in Hawthorne

A lot of the best high school basketball talent in the country will be on display this weekend at the Hawthorne Athletic Xchange (better known as "The HAX"), which is located just off Crenshaw off the 105 Freeway at 3203 Jack Northrup Ave.

Forty-two Nike-sponsored travel teams from across the country will participate in the third stop of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League this spring.

Games begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday -- with games played on five courts in the facility -- and end at about 10:45 p.m.

Action gets underway at 8 a.m. on Monday and concludes at about 12:15 p.m.

Among the teams participating are the California Supreme (whose roster includes Ryan Anderson, Alex Carmon and Roschon Prince of Poly). An interesting 12:30 p.m. matchup Saturday has California Supreme taking on the Oakland Soldiers.

Admission is $5 daily -- a pretty sweet deal considering you will have access to 45 games on both Saturday and Sunday, and 15 on Memorial Day.

The Lakewood High at Mater Dei CIF Southern Southern Section Division I baseball quarterfinal playoff game will get underway at 6 o'clock on Friday night, Mater Dei athletic director Phil Bellomo confirmed Thursday morning.

The Monarchs earned the right to play host to the game because they played one game at home and the other on the road in the playoffs, while the Lancers were the home squad in both of their games.

Wears sign with UCLA

Former Mater Dei High basketball standouts David and Travis Wear have signed scholarship agreements with UCLA, their father, Dave Wear, told the Press-Telegram this morning.
The 6-foot-10 twins, who were 2008-09 Press-Telegram Best in the West selections and McDonald's All-Americas, decided to transfer after completing this past academic year at the University of North Carolina.
"The paperwork has been signed and sent," the elder Wear said.
``They are going to enroll for the first summer school session (at UCLA)."
As for other schools that tried to recruit the twins after they got their releases from UNC, their father said "Let's just say there was a lot of interest. Some very high-profile schools reached out to us. Some (of the coaches) were willing to recruit one, the other or both of them. But the boys were adamant that they wanted to stay together."
He laughed.
"And it was going to be somewhere on the west coast," he said. "The boys and their mother (Gloria Wear) had no intention of going outside of this time zone."

Wear twins not returning to UNC

Freshman basketball forwards David and Travis Wear - McDonald's All-Americas and Best in the West selections as seniors at Mater Dei High - will not be returning to the University of North Carolina, their father told the Press-Telegram tonight.
Dave Wear said he discussed the decision with Tar Heels' coach Roy Williams earlier in the evening by telephone and that he hoped that his sons would be released from their scholarship agreements with the school ``as early as Thursday".
Wear wouldn't offer any details as to why the players (who took their last spring semester finals today) were making the move other than to say ``they decided they didn't want to return to North Carolina.
``When they return home (in Huntington Beach) we will sit down as a family and review their basketball and academic options,'' he said.
The twins were among the country's most heavily recruited prospects in the class of 2009 and were sought after by a multitude of schools - UCLA and Arizona were believed to be among their finalists - before they committed to the Tar Heels in the spring of their junior years at Mater Dei. They signed national letters of intent in November of their senior seasons.
Travis Wear played in 32 games for the Tar Heels this past season, averaging 10.3 minutes, 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
His brother played in 27 games - missing the final five games because of a hip injury that required surgery in early March - while averaging 10.5 minutes, 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds per game.
