Freshman basketball forwards David and Travis Wear - McDonald's All-Americas and Best in the West selections as seniors at Mater Dei High - will not be returning to the University of North Carolina, their father told the Press-Telegram tonight.
Dave Wear said he discussed the decision with Tar Heels' coach Roy Williams earlier in the evening by telephone and that he hoped that his sons would be released from their scholarship agreements with the school ``as early as Thursday".
Wear wouldn't offer any details as to why the players (who took their last spring semester finals today) were making the move other than to say ``they decided they didn't want to return to North Carolina.
``When they return home (in Huntington Beach) we will sit down as a family and review their basketball and academic options,'' he said.
The twins were among the country's most heavily recruited prospects in the class of 2009 and were sought after by a multitude of schools - UCLA and Arizona were believed to be among their finalists - before they committed to the Tar Heels in the spring of their junior years at Mater Dei. They signed national letters of intent in November of their senior seasons.
Travis Wear played in 32 games for the Tar Heels this past season, averaging 10.3 minutes, 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
His brother played in 27 games - missing the final five games because of a hip injury that required surgery in early March - while averaging 10.5 minutes, 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds per game.

Since both were in line to start next season, I would guess they are home sick! West Coast players (UCLA, Arizona, Pac-10). I will hate to see them go. But, home is where the heart is!
Roy had to run somebody off so he would have a scholarship open to offer Austin Rivers. By running these guys off he got 2 for the price of 1!

I have been in Chapel Hill for the past month, this is totally out of the blue! DId they just get homesick? We've had numerous west coast players under in recent years. This is not good.
Any hints, rumors, ideas where they might land and whats the rules on eligibility. Will they only have 2 years left?
Good for them,play that far from home is not good. I like the kids,but they play better with a floor leader,someone to feed them the ball.. I wish them the best in everything....

So Williams he can just reload on bodies. These young players did not like loosing or playing for a losing coach. They want to play for a school who wanted them as human beings not just one of many in the big recruitment battle. “Their father called me last night and asked for their release, which came as a complete surprise. I met with both kids in mid-April for our typical end-of-year meetings and together we worked on their development plans for next season. Both David and Travis seemed to be excited about their futures at North Carolina.

These guys were overrated from the get go anyway.
I wish the Wear Twins the best of luck in their next college. They should have gone to a better program, with a better coach, who doesn't critize his players in public,like Coach K at Duke in the first place. Go Blue Devils.
These guys are headed to UCLA. Howland's got some extra scholarships to burn, and these boys were on the fence at UCLA before Roy got them. Howland will turn them into professional players, just look at his record in creating NBA guys. These players will like put UCLA back in the final four in two years, just when one or both leave to the NBA. I wonder though, if Stanford would be better, since thay have experience with the large twins (Lopez).
HAHA..Dixon you are really funny. If u think that UNC will be good next year than look at Duke. We have The best point guard in the country coming in. Also Singler and Smith are both returning. And the Plumlee brothers will get much better next year.

Home sick? Doubt it. Why would twin bros be home sick with each other to lean on? They were definitely getting more PT. Could they keep up with the others? They did OK as frosh. I think Dad, influencers convinced kids to come home and play for weak Pac-10.
Roy does an excellent job recruiting esp. nationally but since UNC he's had a few transfers now. Alex Stepheson was a Californa kid. He played at least a couple yrs but transferred to USC for "family" reasons. UNC went on to win NCAA the next yr... CA kids Wear twins tranfer back to CA - can UNC win an NCAA w/out them? Will be intg to find out.

This is Travis Wear. I'm sick of reading all the crap being written about us. Dave and I are leaving because we are sick of being screamed at by Coach Williams. He treats his players like stuff you scrape off the bottom of your shoe and we've had it. His court-side tirades are nothing compared to the abuse we took in the locker room. I'd rather play for a Division III team than live through another year like last.
I'm glad these twins wised up lol... they obviously are not dumb bc they found out after 1 yr that UNC sucks & didn't wanna waste their time with that sorry program... & you talk about these guys playing for the weak Pac-10 lol half the teams in the Pac-10 are better than UNC lol... UNC will be a better team next yr bc they have a decent pg coming & Harrison Barnes for 1 yr but they will still suck lol... Duke will own them next year & for years to come bc the next yr we will have the third Plumlee brother & Austin Rivers :) so UNC fans better get used to being owned by Duke & we will get our 5th & 6th NCAA Championships before they win another & I finally won't have to listen to anymore crap from you obnoxious Tar Holes :) Thank God!

Hate all you want but he is by far one of the best coaches!He had an aweful season but you can't win em all people!As far as the Wear Twins are concerned......they could have been respectful enough to talk it over with UNC and not have daddy to call him!
