Hoop-A-Thon to benefit Huntington's research

| | Comments (0) |

Current and former UCLA men's basketball players will participate in the "Hoop-A-Thon" in Pauley Pavilion from 6 to 10 o'clock tonight.

With UCLA Coach Ben Howland and his wife, Kim, serving as honorary hosts, the players and donors will shoot free throws with proceeds benefit the Huntington's Disease Center of Excellence at UCLA, Huntington's disease support, patient care and ongoing research efforts. Huntington's is an inherited and fatal degenerative disease for which there is no cure.

Among the UCLA alumni scheduled to take part tonight are current NBA players Arron Afflalo, Trevor Ariza, Darren Collison, Jordan Farmar, Jrue Holiday, Ryan Hollins and Luc RIchard Mbah a Moute.

Among other former players set to participate are Tyus Edney (now on the Bruins' coaching staff), Ed O'Bannon, Don MacLean and Tracy Murray.

The Long Beach State men's basketball program got its second commitment from the prep class of 2011 today.

Shaquille Hunter, a 6-foot-2 guard who will be a senior at Villa Park High next month, told the Press-Telegram this afternoon that he committed to Coach Dan Monson's program this morning.

He averaged 21 points per game as a junior for Coach Kevin Reynolds' Spartans.

He joins Corona Centennial point guard Michael Caffey (who committed a couple of weeks ago) as seniors-to-be who say they will sign national letters of intent with the 49ers in November.
