Clippers make roster move

| | Comments (0) |

Marqus Blakely, a 6-foot-5 undrafted rookie from the University of Vermont, has been waived by the Clippers, the club announced this afternoon.

The move leaves the current roster at 14 -- which is what it will likely be at when the team opens the season Wednesday night against Portland in the Staples Center.

One of those 14 will apparently be veteran free-agent center/power forward Jarron Collins, a Harvard-Westlake graduate who played eight years for Utah and last season with Phoenix.

Collins just told reporters that he was told by Neil Olshey (the team's Vice President of Basketball Operations) ``to be ready Wednesday night."

I'm at Paramount High for the Pirates SGVL clash with Downey.

This is the first time I've been in the school's new stadium . . . very impressive!

JRW Classic tickets on sale Saturday

| | Comments (0) |

Tickets for the 17th John R. Wooden Classic (held Nov. 18 in the Honda Center in Anaheim) go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m.

The doubleheader looks to be one of the more attractive of the men's college hoops November and December non-conference events.

The first game has Long Beach State taking on Saint Mary's at 11:45 a.m. with UCLA and BYU following at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Tickets (priced from $179 to $27) will be available at all Ticketmaster locations and on-line at Ticketmaster.com.

Hoops standout Stephens commits to Utah State

According to the Salt Lake City Tribune, 6-foot-8 Santa Monica City College sophomore DeShawn Stephens has committed to Utah State.

Stephens also considered scholarship offers from Long Beach State, San Diego State and Hawaii.

Eric Gordon said ankle sprain "nothing serious"

| | Comments (0) |

Clippers guard Eric Gordon turned his right ankle attempting to drive by a defender in the second quarter against Sacramento and spent the second half on the bench with ice on it.

"But's alright -- I should be able to practice on Thursday (the Clippers have Wednesday off); it's nothing serious," he said.

Clippers make first cuts

| | Comments (0) |

The Clippers just announced their first roster cuts and none of them were surprising.

Released were free-agent rookie guards Jon Scheyer (Duke) and Stephen Dennis (Kutztown University) and veteran free-agent center Jake Voskuhl.

The moves left the team with a 15-player roster as it prepares for its fourth preseason game Tuesday night in Mexico City against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Clippers play their first preseason home game Thursday night in the Staples Center against Denver.

Poly up, 21-14

Clippers report from Camp Pendleton

| | Comments (0) |

OCEANSIDE - The 2010-11 Clippers made their public debut Sunday afternoon in front of approximately 200 members of the U.S. Marine Corps and Marine family members at Camp Pendleton.
Coach Vinny Del Negro sat in the top row of the bleachers in Paige Fieldhouse, watched and took a few notes as assistants Dean Demopoulos (the white jerseys) and Mark Iavaroni (the blue jerseys) coached the split-squad scrimmage, with the White team ``winning'', 39-32, over two, 20-minute (with running clock) sessions.
Each of the teams had two projected starters for the team's Oct. 27 regular-season opener (at home to Portland), with center Chris Kaman scoring 12 points and forward Ryan Gomes adding seven for the White,
Guard Eric Gordon had nine points and forward Blake Griffin added six for the Blue, which trailed by as many as 14 point before Gordon - with a pass to Deandre Jordan for a dunk, a 3-pointer from the left wing and a pull-up 15-footer - sparked a late 7-0 run.
Baron Davis - the projected starter at point guard - watched the scrimmage from the bench, as was anticipated, with his left knee wrapped in ice after he participated in a one-hour workout before the scrimmage.
Two other members of the 18-member roster, veteran forward Craig Smith (tightness in his lower back) and rookie Willie Warren (a strained groin), were also just spectators for the scrimmage.
Among the likely bright spots for the coaching staff (coaches and players weren't available to the media for comments after a brief autograph session before they boarded busses back to Los Angeles) was the play of Kaman, Gordon, Gomes and Eric Bledsoe.
The 7-foot Kaman, an all-star selection last season, did pretty much as he pleased offensively while mostly being guarded by Jordan and scored 10 of his team's first 15 points over the first six and a half minutes.
Gordon missed some makeable jump shots but asserted himself - especially off the dribble - down the stretch.
Gomes scored all of his points in the second half, knocking in a straightaway 3-point after a pass out of the post from Kaman, and adding layups after a cut (and pass from Jarron Collins) and on a slashing drive.
Bledsoe, a first-round pick by way of the University of Kentucky acquired from Oklahoma City on draft night, was much more poised and efficient at point guard for the White team than he was while playing in the Las Vegas Summer League in July.
The team was scheduled to work out in the Clippers Training Center in Playa Vista this morning before boarding a charter flight later today for a flight to Portland for the team's preseason opener Tuesday night.

Lights out at Saddleback College

. . . or just about, anyway, after the Santa Margarita Eagles rolled over the Los Alamitos Griffins, 31-7.

Los Alamitos has a bye until opening Sunset League play against Fountain Valley at Huntington Beach High on Oct. 15.

What the Griffins need between now and then is a magic wand to wave over the left foot of running back NIck Richardson's left foot in a attempt to heal his broken toe that has kept him sidelined for two weeks.

Eagles score again

Now's it's 28-0 four minutes into the third quarter.

There are a lot of flies in the press box to annoy me . . . maybe I need a new blog picture with buzzing flies swarming that Double Double coming out of my skull!

This is a very good team -- another one from the Trinity League! The Eagles just punched out the Los Alamitos defense for another TD. It's 21-0 with 3:01 to go in the second quarter.

The host Eagles (the game is at Saddleback College) have scored touchdowns on each of their first two possessions and are rocking the Los Alamitos Griffins, 14-zip, nine minutes into their non-league game.

SJB and Brown roll over Highlanders

And it's over in Bellflower -- 2:52 after kickoff!

St. John Bosco, behind running back Martin Brown's 279-yard performance (on 22 carries) punched out a pretty good La Habra team, 35-17, to stretch its record to 4-1.

Now things get serious: The Braves have a bye next week before opening Trinity League in Santa Ana Stadium on Oct. 14 against Mater Dei.

Raymond Medina and Rodney Morgan tagged up for 43 yards and another TD -- SJB 35-17.

The Highlanders struck first, covering 78 yards -- the last two of those by Brett Bartolone out of a Wildcat formation -- to go up on the host Braves, 6-0.

The host and Braves and La Habra are about to kickoff. It's a very pleasant evening -- and, I'm guessing, the last football game I'll cover this season without bringing a jacket.
