San Gabriel Valley Tribune has posted free Memorial Day events in the area for anyone wishing to pay tribute to military personnel and their families.

Free entry for veterans

To honor veterans, Queen Mary in Long Beach is offering free admission during Memorial Day weekend for veterans and active serving military.

General admission includes a self-guided tour and "Ghosts & Legends." Military personnel must provide their military ID.

Also, more than 650 museums nationwide are paying tribute with free admission for military personnel and their families -- from Memorial Day, May 31, to Labor Day, Sept. 6.

Remembering veterans at Arcadia park

Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich is hosting the 13th annual "Remembering Our Veterans and Their Families: Past, Present and Future" on Saturday, May 29.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It includes live music, food booths, a special tribute to the armed forces at 11:30 a.m. and more.

There will be immunizations at no cost, as well as haircuts, manicures and health screenings.
The event is free and will be held rain or shine.

It will take place at Arcadia County Park, 405 S. Santa Anita Ave. in Arcadia. For more information, call 626-967-1441 or 909-394-2264.

Dance lessons

Feel like learning a few new moves? Dance Downtown is taking place at the Music Center Plaza from 6:30 to 10 p.m. today, May 21, where you can learn two Latin dance styles.

The beginner lessons will teach Cumbia and Merengue for free There is no need to bring a partner. It is on a first come, first served basis.

KPCC election discussion with Patt Morrison

Join 89.3 KPCC's Patt Morrison in a discussion about California politics and the role minority voters will have on the election in 2010 at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 20.

The discussion will focus on the priorities, hopes and aspirations of California's Asian, Latino, black and other ethnic minority voters.

Panelists include Michael Alvarez, Professor of Political Science at Cal Tech; author of "New Faces, New Voices: The Hispanic Electorate in America"; Efrain Escobedo, Executive Liaison Officer for the L.A. County Registrar Recorder; Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Executive Director of the Community Coalition; and Stewart Kwoh, Executive Director and President of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California.

Admission is free, but RSVP is required. The event will take place at The Crawford Family Forum, 474 S. Raymond Ave. in Pasadena.

Monterey Park birthday celebration

Happy birthday Monterey Park! Celebrate with the city at its birthday bash this weekend until Sunday, May 16.

The carnival continues from 5 p.m. to midnight today, from noon to midnight on Saturday and from 1 to 10 p.m. on Sunday.

The Play Days parade will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday on Garvey Avenue, between Alhambra and McPherrin. It includes performances by dance groups, clowns, the Alhambra Unified School District Band and more.

Taste of Armenia festival

taste.jpgTaste of the World: Armenia is coming to Paseo Colorado in Pasadena from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 16.

The event is the first in a series of cultural festivals that will take place at the outdoor courtyard of the Paseo.

The festival will include music, dance, food and artistry of Armenia. Admission is free.

JPL open house

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory will be opening up its campus at 4800 Oak Grove Drive in Pasadena from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16

This is the one day a year when the public is invited to check out the mission control room for the Deep Space Network or tour the "clean room," where engineers have a sterile, superclean space for assembling instruments.

Many of the lab's scientists and engineers are on hand to answer questions about how spacecraft are sent to other planets, how scientists utilize space technologies to explore Earth and how researchers are searching for planets beyond the solar system.

There will be special hands-on activities designed for kids. Admission and parking is free.

El Pollo Loco churros

Drop off a non-perishable food item at any participating El Pollo Loco in the Los Angeles County until May 28 to receive a free churro for each donated item.

There is a limit of four free churros per person. Offer is valid only until May 28 in L.A. County.

El Pollo Loco will donate its collections to nonprofit Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

National Train Day

Join the National Train Day celebration by visiting your local station on Saturday, May 8.

The Los Angeles celebration at Union Station will include a railroad braceros exhibit, train equipment displays, model trains, a go-green exhibit and more. The Union Station event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. parking is $6 at East Cesar Chavez and North Vignes Street. The station is at 800 N. Alameda Street in Los Angeles.

Santa Monica festival

This Mother's Day weekend, check out Santa Monica Festival in Santa Monica on Saturday, May 8, for an inexpensive way to get your festivities on.

The day will include musical performances, cultural dances and more. Check out the schedule for performance times.

Admission and parking is free. There will be free valet for bike riders.

The festival is at Clover Park, 2600 Ocean Park Blvd. in Santa Monica, between 25th and 28th streets.

Playwright reading festival

Playwrights Union kicks off its first reading festival of new work on Thursday, April 6 at Victory Theatre Center in Burbank.

The festival starts at 6:30 p.m. with "The Nether" by Jennifer Haley followed by a reception at 8 p.m. and "Puzzler" by Padraic Duffy at 8:30 p.m.

The event will continue daily until Sunday, May 9 with a similar format. Check out the schedule.

Playwrights Union is a network of Los Angeles theater artists, who write for stage, television and film.

The center is at 3326 W. Victory Blvd. in Burbank.

Emeril's 20th anniversary cookbook

The book contains some of the chef's favorites, including cocktails, cream pie and more.

Teacher appreciation with free coffee at Corner Bakery
