Villaraigosa and Salinas Must Come Clean on Public Policy Damage of Their Affair
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s personal relationship with suspended Telemundo reporter Mirthala Salinas crossed the line and poses a possible conflict with public policy decisions, or worse, impedes or influences those decisions and the reporting of those decisions. The perfect example of this is Villaraigosa’s arm twist of the state legislature and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to back his terribly flawed and ultimately failed plan to run the LAUSD schools. Salinas reported extensively on the school battle in Sacramento, even appearing at the Capitol in interview shots with him.
Now here are the questions. Did Salinas talk to the teachers, parents, and school officials that opposed the mayor’s plan? Did she talk to the state legislators that voted against the plan? Did the station make a comprehensive assessment of the pros and cons of the mayor’s takeover plan? This, as other vital policy issues, demands the most rigorous, unbiased, scrutiny by the media. If that isn’t done then reporters simply become shills for politicians.
Villaraigosa and Salinas must come clean about their relationship and the role it played in slanting news of city affairs.
