Alligator alert! Reggie's zoo debut

I'm unreasonably fascinated with Reggie, the large alligator that lived in the South L.A.'s Lake Machado, eluding capture for two years. Though I advocated for authorities to let him stay, I'm also excited at the prospect of visiting him at the L.A. Zoo, where he has been allowed to stay since his capture in May. I have to commend zoo officials for not dumping Reggie even though they already have plenty of fine alligators. Reggie is an L.A. homeboy with a gritty survival story of life out on the mean city streets. He was raised in a bathtub by a former LAPD cop in San Pedro, then dumped into the lake when he got unwieldy. Among the plastic Ralph's bags and beer cans, the alligator managed to survive -- and thrive, it seems. I can't wait to meet him.

Thursday is the big day, when Reggie will make his first zoo appearance at 11.a.m. in his new habitat. I don't know about you, but I'm going to be there.
