An Immigration Angle Where You'd Least Expect One ...

... is to be found in the bizarre story of the guys who wrecked a Ferrari along the PCH last year:

A 26-year-old man was in custody today after being on the run for more than a year following a high-speed crash in Malibu that destroyed a rare $1 million Ferrari Enzo.

Trevor Michael Karney, 26, was being held in lieu of $60,000 bail following his arrested at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Marina del Rey, officials said.

Karney reportedly has spent much of the last year in his native Dublin, Ireland. He returned to California around a month ago via Tijuana, and a friend helped smuggle him back into the U.S.

We don't know much about Karney, other than that he was in a suspicious crash, mingled with a suspicious crowd, and was allegedly carrying (illegally) a fully loaded Glock at the scene of the crime. But apparently he so feared justice that he fled the country. And when he wanted back in, he came through the sieve that separates the U.S. and Mexico.

When we talk about America's troubled border, there's much more at stake than the migration of fruit pickers. Our uncontrolled border makes entry easy not just for "udocumented workers," but also for bona-fide criminals, fugitives, even terrorists. We cannot have meaningful homeland security until we can monitor who's entering and who's leaving this country.

And we can't do that until we adopt sensible, practical, and enforceable immigration laws.
