Antonio and Mirthala on the Rocky Road

| | Comments (2) |

salinasav.jpgWe really need a better class of sneaky politicians. Our mayor and half the city council are drowning in over-consumption of water. Our City Attorney can’t do a decent cover up of, well, anything—from Hilton’s special treatment in jail for driving without a license, to his wife not going to jail for un-licensed and un-insured driving.

Now Mayor Antonio and girl-friend Mirthala get “caught” shopping together. I say caught because that’s how they acted. Antonio stops and invites the picture, gallantly taking the hit for Mirthala. She hovers, then figures out that she can move out of frame. Brilliant.

Here’s the thing: The time to act guilty and ashamed is when you are actually hiding something. Now that (irony alert) His Honor is living apart from soon to be ex, and the news about him and the newsie is out, stop acting as if this is clandestine. If you act guilty you send the message that you are now, and will forever be, guilty.

Ms. Mirthala, don’t go out in public if you don’t want to be seen. There is no cloak of invisibility. The way to turn the cameras off is to invite them in. Yes, a paradox, but like the Purloined Letter, it is best to hide in plain sight and brazen it out. If you and Antonio are going to be an item, embrace it. Own it. Go to movie premiers. Be seen at exclusive boites. Study the example of former mayor Riordan before he married his most recent ex-wife.

And about the excessive water use. Too late for cold showers.

More accurately, he stopped AND stepped to the right. The move was a classic 'oh shit!' one.

He clearly had no idea the video would end up on TMZ and all over. Yes, they do look unsure of whether to hide or reveal themselves as a couple, which makes everyone speculate all the more. And you're right that Riordan seems to have gotten away with all his marriages (and two current girlfriends, allegedly) with nary a comment, because he "owns" it. His so-what attitude is disarming.

But Antonio's base of simple and moralistic Hispanics, joined by conservative Catholics and evangelicals from all over, really came at him like a tsunami. And the reporters have achieved a new level of viciousness and tabloid/ paparazzi pursuit of prey.

Mirthala, too, has had her past love-life dredged up, to make her out a scarlett woman: Riordan's wives and g.f.'s have been anonymous, or at least neutrally viewed.

Maybe all sides need to step back and regroup.
